Poster Design for Sounding Rome

Miriam Zach, the Charles and Mary Sukup Endowed Artist in Organ, tasked us with the design for a poster of a lecture/recital at which she presents music by Roman composers to students who plan to spend the Spring semester 2018 in the eternal city to study architecture. The event will take place on Monday, 11 September at 4:00pm in the Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall in the Music building at Iowa State University.

The project had a fast turnaround time, so we had to work intuitively. The only reference that came to mind was a 1953 painting by René Magritte titled Golconda (see below).

Poster for Women Composers’ Festival

For the 21st International Festival of Women Composers which will take place in Ames, Iowa this year, we just completed the design for the main poster. It comes in two sizes, one 24 inches x 36 inches, and a smaller one (12 inches x 18 inches) that will be given to the individual performers on the day of the concerts.

This year, based on the instruments that will be featured during the performances, we used abstracted representations of a harpsichord (red), an oboe (orange), a pipe organ (yellow), a piano (green), voice (blue), trumpet (indigo), violin (violet), in order to show off the wide range (roygbiv) of the performances. Following the identity of Iowa State University, which is one of the co-sponsors this year, the fonts are limited to ITC Berkeley and Univers.

The background is a rather blurry detail of a photograph showing Helen Keller holding hands with Ann Sullivan.

Final Poster for 20th Festival of Women Composers

Here’s the final version of the poster I designed for the 20th Festival of Women Composers. The client didn’t quite like the purple, so that went the way of the dodo. Also, the Valois tapestry was hard to decypher, even at the 24″ x 36″ size. Rescaling the image (showing only a detail) and using the original colors worked wonders. For the remaining text, logos, and the bird I used color swatches pulled from the Valois tapestry. The client was impressed;–)

Poster Design for Festival of Women Composers

Here are three versions for posters I designed as a pro bono effort for the Margaret Zach International Library of Women Composers which organizes the annual International Festival of Women Composers. This is the 20th anniversary, so we played up that number in the poster, and given the emphasis on women we used purple for the initial draft. As an alternative we borrowed colors from the Valois tapestry (lower left corner), which the festival’s founder and creative director Dr. Miriam Zach wanted to include, since some of the music references the Medici Court. Draft No. 3 is a variation on No. 2. The bird in the ‘0/female’ sign comes directly from the Woodstock poster, in commemoration of the power of music to bring people together.

First Draft of DoA Lecture Poster

The Department of Architecture’s Lecture Series topic for the Fall 2015 is Architecture Off-Center. As an illustration I decided to use an image from U.S. Patent 5,505,221 which describes the design of an off-center umbrella.
