Walking from Studio to Car

File under Observation

From my fourth-year architecture studio, located currently in the Communications building north of the Armory on the Iowa State University campus, I’m walking at the end of the day past the construction site of the Student Innovation Center which is going up north of Hoover and south of Sweeney (for more info on the building going up see https://www.inside.iastate.edu/article/2017/01/12/center).

Now that we’re moving closer to the shortest day (December 21), my experience after studio happens as the sun has already set but the sky is still light toward the west.

For the photograph below I stopped, briefly, to capture the contrast between crane, the old water tower, and the already existing Hoover Hall. Then I moved on.

Ad Copy Design for Brantley’s Transatlantic Trio

Here are two ads I put together for The Scriblerian and the Wordsworth Circle to advertise Richard Brantley’s Transatlantic Trio book. It’s suprising how photogenious a book looks in the morning sun in Iowa outside the Culicidae Press offices…

Client: Culicidae Press, LLC, Ames, Iowa

idea – design – build

Here’s an example of my idea – design – build process: over the years the existing concrete steps to our Maison de la Musique at 922 5th Street in Ames, Iowa were leaning badly and had sheared off from the handrail piece, so we had the stair removed by Ames Excation and Trenching. The we bounced some ideas around about how to replace the now absent stairs with a new wooden structure made of cedar. Below are the design sketches and some construction photographs. Still missing is the wrap-around bench/handrail on the north and west sides.
